Rachel Oniga played significant role in building Nollywood – Oghenesivbe

The death of popular Nollywood artiste, Rachel Oniga, has thrown the people of Delta State and Nigeria, as a whole, into mourning.

Oniga hailed from Eku Community in the Agbon Kingdom, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta.

According to her family, she died on Friday night at the age of 64.

In a signed press statement, a Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, Oghenesivbe, paid glowing tributes to the deceased actress.

The statement reads, “She was born in Lagos, and played a significant role in the buildup for Nollywood as the national film industry’s trademark. She will be greatly missed.”

The government expressed “condolences to (the) Nollywood family, her immediate community of Eku, Delta State, her immediate family, children and to all her teeming fans around the world”.

In the span of her career, which was about 27 years, the multiple award-winning actress featured in movies like The Wedding Party, The Royal Hibiscus Hotel, 30 Days in Atlanta, Sango, and Out of Bounds, among others.
