Post created on August 3, 2021

Nigeria’s Ese Brume and Blessing Oborududu have won a bronze medal and a silver medal respectively at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Brume, with a 6.97m jump in the Long Jump event, claimed the bronze medal, which was Nigeria’s first medal at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.

She qualified for the final on Sunday morning after she leapt to a distance of 6.76m, 1cm more than the required mark to seal her place.

Germany’s Malaika Mihambo clinched the gold medal with 7.00m jump while U.S.A’s Brittney Reese clinched the silver medal with 6.97m on count back.

Blessing Oborududu won a silver medal even as she suffered a 4-1 loss to Tamyra Marianna Stock Mensah of the United States in the 68kg women’s wrestling event.

Oborududu has won a gold medal at the African Wrestling Championships every year for the last 11 years, except for 2012 when she did not enter due to competing in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Apart from Ajunwa’s gold in 1996 Atlanta, Blessing Okagbare is another Nigerian to have won a medal in the Olympic Long Jump event having won silver at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
